Dark Matter by Tony Harratt

For sometime now I have been gathering a collection of images for a personal project entitled “Dark Matter”. All the images are post-processed with as dark a sky as possible so that the highlights of the subject can be enhanced. The process works best with sunlit buildings or other forms of architecture and cloudless skies but this is not always possible.

The style of presentation also satisfies another element of my photography, my vision and style: I love square black & white images. Each of the collection displayed here have been produced in this style.

For the images in “Dark Matter” I underexpose in-camera to preserve highlights and manipulate sky and shadow tones in Lightroom to achieve the desired result. Highlights are lightened with the Highlight and White sliders. Other post-processing uses sharpening, Lightroom’s excellent Transform tool – to reset vertical and horizontal lines – and tone curves.

There is nothing unique during the process of making these images; there are many folk who use similar techniques. One of the very best exponents is Greek architect and fine art photographer Julia Anna Gospodarou, who uses far more complex processing than I do! Her website is well worth a visit (see link above).

I hope that you enjoy this small sample of the images I have made for “Dark Matter” during my travels; I had a great deal of fun making them… Enjoy!
