This portrait was taken high in the Drakensberg mountains of South Africa in 2010. We came across a women and two small boys walking alone beside the road seemingly in the middle of nowhere. With the women’s permission, I made just two portraits of the boys. They were clearly very poor but looked strong and worldly despite their age. The scars on his face tell of the persistence of tribal traditions in a country keen to position itself as the modern face of Africa. John Meehan
Beautiful portrait John.
